Remarkable Rhythm R&D is a three-week exploration of integrated audio description and movement in the development of ‘Remarkable Rhythm’ - a 20-minute dance theatre show for family audiences exploring communication and connection.
My desire is that this show will be a way for audiences to explore, with the performers, how we as people negotiate communication with those unlike ourselves; to enable audiences to question existing language dominances and learn how we can correct that imbalance in our everyday encounters with those around us.
Over the course of three weeks, I want to explore how integrated audio description can be used throughout a dance theatre show to engage not only visually impaired audiences but also to become a part of the inner monologue of a character. My intention is that the audio description becomes a consistent aspect of the work instead of simply added for access. Throughout this research and development I would also like to dedicate time to discovering how movement can be used to depict the development of the relationship between the two characters in the show in a way that is visibly clear for all audiences but especially for audiences who do not engage in the aural aspects of the work. My desire is to explore how to create a work that allows a diversity of communities to engage to the core show in their own way instead of adding access to a finished work.
