I’m a writer and director whose films explore themes of intersectional identity, mental health and wellbeing, and empowerment to challenge myself and audiences toward introspection and social change.

Drawing from my movement practice, I aim to explore the line between screen dance and scripted drama.

My interest in creating for film first developed in 2020 from a desire to extend the reach of my work and explore other mediums for creating dance theatre. My love of film, writing, and movement has only spurred my continued development as a filmmaker.

SEVEN

Seven is an autobiographical short by writer/director Krystal S. Lowe. Backed by BBC Wales, BFI Network Wales, and Ffilm Cymru, this simplistic and thought provoking piece explores the realities of living with depression and the moments, and people, that bring relief.

Seven stars real life sisters Bethan Mary-James and Kezrena James who portray friends in an honest and gripping true story about the value of connection and the power of vulnerability.

Complexity of Skin

In a flat during lockdown, two neurodivergent people's desire for touch collides with the discomfort it causes. Moving in and out of physical contact, they share feelings, memories, hopes, and fears as their relationship develops. As they speak and narrate their experiences, we learn how the complexities of neurodiversity affect their everyday encounters.

Somehow

Somehow is a love song to ourselves, to those we know and those we have yet to meet. It is an exploration of intimacy and relationships, not only between the music and movement, but between performer and audience. Reflecting on new forms and spaces for music theatre to exist within, writer and dancer Krystal S. Lowe and composer Jasmin Kent Rodgman have created a work that draws on the theatre of opera, the emotion and expression of lieder and innateness of dance. Blurring the lines between onstage and onscreen, Somehow hopes to offer a redefined operatic experience that embodies how we live today and our connections with one another.

Rewild | Ailwylltio

Recalling her childhood, a woman wonders how to reclaim her identity. Alone in nature she explores with a freedom long forgotten; climbing, running, swimming, until she realises what she has given up to be accepted. Embracing ‘wildness’, she rejects all expectations that limit her, and begins to grow again.

Created for screen, this visual poem reflects a spoken word performance by creator and dancer Krystal S. Lowe.
